2020 Edward W. Morley Award Winner: John Herbert

Congratulations to the 2020 Edward W. Morley medal winner, John Herbert , Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The Ohio State University. The Morley award presentation and Prof. Herbert’s address to be scheduled at a later date.

John Herbert grew up in Kansas and attended Kansas State University.  He received a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied under Prof. John Harriman, and was an NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow in the group of Prof. Martin Head-Gordon at the University of California-Berkeley.  Since 2006 he has been a faculty member at Ohio State University, rising to the rank of Full Professor in 2014.  Prof. Herbert is the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and has been a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.  His research interests lie in theoretical methods, algorithm, and software development for quantum chemistry, with specific interests in condensed-phase spectroscopy, excited-state dynamics, and noncovalent interactions.  Prof. Herbert and his students are major contributors to the “Q-Chem” electronic structure code.
