Volunteering Opportunities to Help Introduce Kids to Chemistry

Each year our Cleveland ACS Section celebrates National Chemistry Week (NCW) in October by presenting a hands-on, age-appropriate program of fun “chemistry” experiments to children in grades 2-6.  We present this Program at select branches of the Cuyahoga County Public Library during NCW to introduce these young students to the wonderful world of chemistry.  We center the Program around a theme provided by National ACS.  This year that theme is The Healing Power of Chemistry, and we have a first-rate presentation planned.

There are two ways you can volunteer to help us with this Program.  The first is by assisting one of our experienced Demonstrators as he/she presents the hour-long program to the students during NCW.  Watching the kids’ faces light up is a reward in itself.

The second is by participating in a morning-long exercise in which we cut, weigh, measure and package all the materials required for each Program.  We call this exercise GAK (Grand Assembly of Kits) Day, and it’s held annually at John Carroll University’s Dolan Center, room W318.  This year it’s on Saturday, Sept. 23 starting at 8:30.  It’s light work, and we provide all materials as well as snacks and drinks and our famous Pizza Lunch.
